Happiness is

Journey of HappinessToday you are lucky (or unlucky?) because I’m writing 2 posts instead of the usual 1 – because shortly after writing my previous post and reflecting on my “failed” marriage (never mind that it was an incredible spiritual journey) I felt that there was still some stuff inside me that I had to get out of my system before I’m empty. I felt as if I should feel guilty about my happiness.

Cynically I used to say “Should I cry because you’re gone, or be happy because you are?“. Wow. That was a bad time in my life. It was pathetic how I held on to something that could never come back, that had no value.

The therapists will tell you that “Happiness is a journey, not a destination“. Slick.

But it isn’t very useful to me as I’m going through all these changes in my life and I have to cope with so many adjustments to my original plans. It feels like I am a failure, sometimes. There is so much happening all the time. I go to bed tired, just to wake up with my feet running before I swing them off the bed.

Then I came across a quote attributed to Father Alfred D’Souza [click here]:

“For a long time is seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life.
But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first,
some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.
At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.
This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness.
Happiness is the way.
So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination.”

Took me a while to recover. I also read the nice description at thirtyvoices [click here] – you should go there.

The fact is, it is not a case of “When I achieve XYZ I will be happy” … rather, it is a case of I am very happy where I am. The destination is not happiness. It is the journey that brings me happiness.

If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies (author unknown).
